Travel App Validation

Background

A friend of mine came to me with an travel app idea he'd be sitting on for several years - he's a travel lover and a self taught developer. He saw a gap in the (already crowded) travel app market. His app idea would allow users to share any article, guide or page to the app. The app would then automatically "scrape" the page for relevant travel related information such as location, pricing, booking information and currates this info into an easy to read nagivate format which allows the user to book from.

My friend had two requests, that he needed help with:
1) validate the app would be useful/ interesting users
2) UI/art direction for him to develop towards.

I suggested running a scoping workshop followed by a design sprint to align on a "user journey" (happy journey) and test it with users.

Scoping workshop:

I started off by running a scoping workshop. A scoping workshop is a set of workshop exercises designed to help the client (in this case, my friend) align and structure their thoughts. The output of this workshop is a clear business pitch - of course only based on their personal perspective of their business.

The scoping workshop relies heavily on "note and vote" exercises. In a "note and vote" exercise, the participants silently write down ("note") their thoughts on sticky notes, then later they "vote" (again in silence, with dot stickers) on the notes which they think are the strongest or most important. The note and vote exercise is designed to ensure everyone has a chance to add their ideas, and then align on the strongest dots.

The Scoping workshop gave me enough background to prepare the design sprint, and build the first version of the journey map.

Design Sprint

We wanted to quickly test and validate the ideas that my friend had so we followed the Design Sprint process.
